Bubba Hernandez Big Pounding Heart CD Release special guests Nick Gaitan and The Umbrella Man and El Tule
Singer, composer, multi-instrumentalist, inventive producer and Grammy award winner Bubba Hernandez redefines the art of sound by creating fresh blends of music. Bubba Hernandez is relentlessly hitting the pavement and slapping the hard drives with fiery, innovative projects that stimulate the imagination. Bubba defined his sound as a 20 1/2 year member of the two-time Grammy award-winning polka rock band, Brave Combo and today he continues to create fresh, alternative-world music in his live performances. His new CD, Big Pounding Heart on Moon Zero Bird Records, showcases an eclectic mix of wild beats and rhythms, blending musical elements with provocative therapy for the brain and ears. Big Pounding Heart, was spearheaded by LA producer/ guitarist Scrote, whose own experimental path has led to work with Reeves Gabrels, Wayne Kramer, Daniel Johnston and members of Ministry among others.
Big Pounding Heart is made up of pop rock songs with worldly rhythms careened through the garage grunge machinery provided by Scrote, delivering a lo-fi crunch like a transistor radio but with a powerful nuclear edginess. It is definitely an off-the-beaten-path style that stirs the senses and adds dash and vigor. “My desire was to sound less conventional. Scrote’s desire was to capture the ‘freshest Bubba possible’. This had Scrote chasing me around the house with low end mics and direct boxes as I played anything bang-able or strum-able in my path.” These instruments included kitchen cabinets, keys, basses, guitars, strummed fans, bottles of wine tapped with spoons and fists pounding on a washing machine. The tracks were fleshed out with musical friends from the neighborhood of the highly regarded Denton musical community.
His first solo disc, Grammy-nominated Polka Freak Out featuring accordionist Alex Meixner, rocked the exotic and unconventional Germanic, Polish, Serbian and other eastern European polka styles with the magic of Tex-Mex. His second album, Dancing En Fuego, had Hernandez combine old school funk and effortlessly bending genres like middle-eastern, lounge and traditional Latin styles such as cumbia, salsa, conjunto, mariachi, and banda with rocking guitars, funky drumming and pumping bass.
Hernandez a fourth-generation musician, allows himself to summon the personal spirit of his Mexican heritage while at the same time building a cultural bridge. “My grandfather, Cenobio I, came to Texas from Mexico to play in the orchestra pit for the silent movies in the early 1920s. With over 100 compositions to his credit, we were fortunately surprised when his piece “Recuerdos” was placed in the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer as well as in the Oscar-winning documentary, The Personals: Improvisations on Romance in the Golden Years after the music had been mostly dormant for 50 years.”
Considering such a gifted pedigree, it is no surprise that Bubba’s own credentials include thirty ongoing years of touring nationally and internationally, appearances in True Stories, The Simpsons, and Late Bloomers. His compositions are featured in radio, television and film including such movies as Day Break, Bullet, Quick, Fools Rush In and The Lord of Illusions. Hernandez’s talents and productions also include a children’s album All Day Fun with Miss Polly (Maynard). His future projects include collaboration with percussionist/producer John Bush of Eddie Brickell and New Bohemians.
Bubba Hernandez y Los Super Vatos includes Ricky Hernandez/keysboards, Robert Hokamp/guitar and Chris Hokamp on drums.
