The Austin Daze presents the musical line-up at Ruta Maya Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

The Austin Daze, long-time sponsors of First Thursdaze every first Thursday of the month at Ruta Maya, is an alternative newspaper covering the arts, music and local Austin scene and has been the winner of the Austin Chronicle's "Best Zine in Austin" award the past two years.

Tuesday is Open Mic Night

Open Mike Poetry Every Tuesday NO COVER 6 PM to 9 PM.

The Ruta Maya Open Mic poetry reading is one of the longest running weekly open mics in Texas. Originally starting in 1995, thousands of poets from Central Texas and all of the populated continents on Earth have performed on the Ruta Maya stage. Hosted by Mark Maslow and David Bates, the open mike opens with a “Round Robin” open mic with no sign up list from 6 to 7 PM followed by a “Sign Up List” open mic from 7 PM to 9 PM.

Poetry Karaoke on the Porch Every Tuesday 8 PM to 10 PM

Poetry Karaoke on the Porch every Tuesday is a welcoming musical and poetic free-for-all outside on the Ruta Maya porch and features some of the most innovative rhythm and poetry in Austin, including internationally known Thom the World Poet. This freeform, improvised acoustic poetry gathering is hosted by Ivanho and Chris the Future. Bring your hand drums, spoons, rattles or whatever else makes a noise and join the jam.

Other than proximity and night, the Poetry Karaoke and Poetry Open Mike are completely different events with separate hosts, though poets will often perform during both shows.

Donations of canned goods and non-perishable food items are requested at both events for the Poets Pantry. The Poets Pantry is a community outreach project by the poetry community on behalf of those who are homeless and stateless and also assists homeless poets with food and clothing when necessary.

Open Mike MUSIC Every Tuesday NO COVER 9:00 PM to 1:00 AM

The Music Open Mike is from 9 PM to 1 AM. Sign up for Open Mike is at 8:30 PM upstairs above the coffee bar with Ozzie and performance order is by lottery. It is not possible to call ahead and be put on the sign up list. MCO's Flong Band is the Ruta Maya House Band and will provide accompaniment if desired. Performance time is 20 minutes. Recordings can be made of Open Mic performances and CDs of these recordings are available to the artist at a minimal fee.
